Location: Irrity District

Area:55 sq. km.

Uniqueness:Located on the western slopes of Western Ghats, Aralam is the northern most wildlife sanctuary of Kerala.

Flora:The major tree species are Artiocarpus heterophyllus, Bishofia javanica, Calophyllum elatum, Cannarium strictum, Cullenia exarillita, Dipterocarpus sp, Drypetes elata, Dysoxylum malabaricum, Elaeocarpus tuberculatus, Holigarna arnottiana, Mesua ferrea, Palanquium ellipticum Bombax ceiba, Dalbergia latifolia, Grewia tiliaefolia, Terminalia sp etc.

Fauna:Elephant, Gaur, Tiger, Panther,Sambar, Spotted deer, Barking deer, Wild boar, Sloth bear, Nilgiri langur, Bonnet macaque, Common langur, Wild dog, common otter, Malabar giant squirrel etc are the major mammals

Chimmony Wild life Sanctuary

Chimmony Wild life Sanctuary

Location: Thrissur District

Area:85.067 sq.km

Uniqueness:Serene, beautiful – Chimmony wildlife sanctuary located in the Western Ghats, is one of the world’s 25 bio-diversity hot-spots, the haven of innumerable species of endangered plants and animals.

Flora:The thick nature of the forest and abundance of rivers and streams make an ideal habitat for a wide variety of flora. In the tropical evergreen forest grows Pali, Punna, Vediplavu, Kalpine, Anjili, Vellapine, Kambakam, Vellakil, Pathiri etc. The lower canopy comprises of Thazhevetty, Thetti, Kana, Marotti, and Mullilavu. In the lower range of deciduous forests are seen Karimthakara, Chadachi, Venga, Poovam, Anakkara, Karkmaruthu, Irul and Thanni.

Fauna:The common mammals found are Tiger, Leopard, sloth bear, Elephant, Sambar, barking deer, bonnet macaque, Nilgiri Langur, slender loris porcupine etc.

Accommodation:Accommodation can be arranged at the Inspection Bunglow, near the Chimmony Dam. Lodging facility is available at Ampalloor also.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

Location: Idukki district

Area:90.422 Sq.Km

Uniqueness:The location of sanctuary offers the unique advantage of watching its fascinating wildlife at close quarters from the road without venturing deep into the jungle. The Marayoor sandal forest and the beautiful Thoovanam waterfalls are located here.

Flora:Thorny Scrub Forest With Xerophytic Species. Dry Deciduous Forests, High Sholas And Wetlands.

Fauna:Elephant, Gaur, Spotted Deer, Panther, Sambar, The Endangered Giant Grizzled Squirrel, Hanuman Langur, Rabbit Etc

Accessibility:Nearest Airport – Coimbatore and Cochin. Nearest Railway Station – Pollachi (60 Km) And Aluva (200 Kms).

Location: Idukki District

Area:97 Sq.Km

Uniqueness:Awesome landscapes of grassy hills of Kerala and also enjoy the magnificent scenic splendor, strewn with wildflowers and boulders, overlooking the vast, blue-green stretches of the gentle hilly valley in Kerala, India.

Flora:Rolling Grasslands and on a Higher Level, Shola Forest.

Fauna:Tigers , Panther, Wild Dog, Civet Cats, Sloth Bear, Nilgiri Langur, Wild Boar, Nilgiri Tahr etc

Accessibility:Nearest Airport : Kochi (143km), Nearest Railway Station : Kochi (143km), Munnar (16km)

Accommodation:Accommodation is available in Munnar town. Royal Retreat at Kannan Devan Hills, Residency at Top Station Road are above medium hotels. Hotel Issacs, East End at Temple Road has some medium range rooms and cottages. Sree Narayana Lodge (S N Lodge) near Post Office, old Munnar are less expensive hotels. In addition, there are government guest houses at Munnar and Devikulam. PWD rest houses also offers accommodation.

Uniqueness:An enchanting place marked with steep mountains and undulating hills and valleys. The world famous Idukki arch dam and the vast increase the importance of the area.

Flora:White Pine, Kuntherekka Pine, Punnappa, Bhadraksham, Palai, Vediplavu, Maravuri, Vayana Etc.

Fauna:The common animals found ar Elephant, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse deer, Bonnet macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Malabar giant squirrel, Wild dog, Wild boar, porcupine, jackal, Indian Giant Squirrel etc.

Location: Thiruvanathapuram District

Area:128 sq. km.Uniqueness:The Neyyar sanctuary is the drainage basin of the Neyyar river and its tributaries ? Mullayar and Kallar

Flora:Common tree species like Terminalia paniculata, T.bellerica, Pterocarpus marsupium, Palaquium ellipticum, Mesua ferrea, Hopea parviflora, Bombax ceiba, Syzygium cumini, Lagerstroemia lanceolata, Adina cordifolia, Albizzia procera, Alstoniascholaris etc.

Fauna:The common mammals found are, Tiger , Leopard, sloth bear, Elephant, sambar, barking deer, bonnet macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Nilgiri tahr etc.

Accessibility:By Road ?Kattakkada ? 11 km. Thiruvananthapuram – 30 km. Nearest Railway Station: Thiruvananthapuram ? 30km. Nearest Airport: 35 km.

Accommodation:A Youth Hostel and a Rest House near the reservoir provides cheap accommodation. Another rest house is situated at Meenmutti. The sanctuary can be reached by road from Thiruvananthapuram, 30kms away. The nearest airport/ railhead to the sanctuary is at Thiruvananthapuram.
